Bunions
« on: May 10, 2015, 07:01:29 PM »
There are many foot conditions that require attention by a podiatrist to be correctly diagnosed and then treated appropriately so your feet are comfortable and allow you to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. A callus is thickened skin that develops from excessive pressure or friction on the bottom of side of your foot. Corns and calluses are skin that becomes thick and hardened. After you have scraped the callus until the white is gone, wash the area gently with soap and dry. Springtime is here!

They can also create more pressure on the feet by restricting the blood vessels and causing tenderness around the toes. This condition can be avoided by wearing the right shoes that can make your feet comfortable. Sometimes, bunions can lead to hammertoe which is a deformity of the joint positioning in the toes. There are presence of dead skin cells in the affected feet and this can lead to the development of corns and calluses. The most common places that are affected on the feet are the toes and sole. Most of the old people experience a condition called tarsal tunnel syndrome that is associated with deformity on the ankle and the foot. This condition can affect the nerves present in the feet leading to numbness, pain and tingling sensation. Calluses and corns are also the common foot problems among all age groups.

Corns are caused from wearing restrictive shoes that put too much pressure on the toes. This isn't a good thing and the body knows it. To protect feet and toes from injury, the skin forms hardened lumps (corns). Bunions are formed when the sideways (transverse) arch falls.

Moleskin pads can help relieve a corn; calluses can be trimmed or surgically corrected. A form of arthritis, gout is characterized by sudden pain, redness, swelling, and stiffness, usually in the large joint of the big toe. Plantar warts are tough growths that develop on the soles of the feet. Plantar warts are harmless and can be left untreated, but in many cases they're too painful to ignore. A fungal infection that can cause peeling, redness, itching, burning, and sometimes blisters and sores, athlete's foot is mildly contagious, passed by direct contact or by walking barefoot in areas such as locker rooms, or near pools. The fungi then grow in shoes, especially tight ones without air circulation. Athlete's foot is usually treated with topical antifungal lotions or oral medications for more severe cases.

Bunions , corns, and calluses can be protected with non medicated felt pads or cloth tape, they can also be treated with an ice pack to ease the pain. The most important tip is to wear the right shoes that form well to your foot and cause no discomfort. Your local drug store carries creams and liquids specialized for treating or easing the pain of these ailments! Symptoms: The most common symptom associated with Toe Walking
is best followed up with supportive therapies to prevent a recurrence of your health problem. A bunion occurs when the big toe is angled inward toward the rest of the toes. Bunions are characterized by a large bump that protrudes out of the side of the foot. This bump is the joint of the big toe that is being pushed awkwardly out of position. While the exact cause of bunion formation is not completely understood, it seems to run in families.

If bunions occur early in life somewhere in the teen ages, then they are considered as an inherited disorder because there is strong evidence of a relation between genetics and bunions However, genetics still play a minor role in the causation of bunions Most bunions are caused by the use of thin toed and high heel shoes.  Misinformation abounds regarding the formation of warts. Our hands and feet take a lot of abuse.

Home remedies include the use of files or pumice stones, which allow you to buff away excess dead skin, and acid products which dissolve the dead skin. If you use the files or pumice stones too aggressively or improperly, you can cause the skin to produce even more thickness, or worse, you can produce injury or infection. Bunions are treated effectively both surgically and non-surgically. And then one night at dinner the fella commented on my cartoon feet.

What Leads To Bunions
It has been more than 2 years since I last posted something about bunion treatments here, but I just got news that the non surgical bunion treatment as used by Milly Ng in HongKong (see the blog post below - Microcurrent treatment) is now also available in the US. I think this is really good news! This is a very common question that we hear all the time, so it needs to be addressed.

My own health care team is made up of chiropractors who work off the spine and Acupuncturists: Five Element and Traditional Chinese styles. As a result, I use not only the reflexes of the foot to treat” a client, I also use the meridian flow of energy, the lymphatic flow, the nerve, breath and blood flows of the body. My foot assessment continues, before I actually begin working, by putting some of the already mentioned factors of bunions, hammer toes, calluses together with what toe they match. I consider the right foot to house things pertinent to the right side of the body. When thinking about anatomy and physiology superimpose the body onto the sole of each foot.

A full gait analysis and pressure analysis examination can be performed in the office which will aid in pinpointing the exact bone deformity that is causing the painful callus. Very tight or narrow shoes can also aid in the formation of corns and calluses due to the excessive pressure from the shoe gear. Non-medicated corn pads are also very helpful to place on the toes to help prevent re-currence of the lesions and to help prevent pain while in shoe gear. The higher the heel the greater the body column change.

Bunions The Important Points
Each year around this time I make a speech where I try my darndest to sound like I'm giving you an honest overview of how things are going in the 9th District. A bunionette is similar to a bunion, but it develops on the outside of the foot It is sometimes referred to as a tailor's bunion because tailors once sat cross-legged all day with the outside edge of their feet rubbing on the ground. P - Aseptic technique was used.

University of Pennsylvania researchers gave 37 arthritis sufferers borage oil (which contains GLA) or a placebo, The placebo had no effect, but the herb group reported 45 percent less pain with no side effects. Researchers at New York Medical College in Valhalla analyzed five studies and found that one-half to one clove of garlic per day reduces cholesterol by 9 percent. The big study was published in 1997 in the journal of the American Medical Association: Researchers n a multicenter study gave 202 people with Alzheimer's either a placebo or ginkgo extract (120 mg a day). For GI infections (ulcer, food poisoning, infectious diarrhea, etc.), ask your doctor about using goldenseal in addition to medical therapies.

A corn is a thicker more focal area with a central core which usually forms over a bony prominence such as a joint. Common causes of corns and callus include; footwear that is poorly fitted i.e. too tight, toe deformities such as clawed toes, bony prominences and gait (walking) abnormalities. These contain acid that help to 'eat away' the corn however, the acid cannot tell the difference between a corn and normal skin and it will eat away whatever you put it on. Use of these types of remedies can be very dangerous and risky in those with poor circulation and/or diabetes and is not recommended. You could also spray your feet with a spray.

If you have hammer toes that constantly get irritated when wearing shoes, try using over the counter corn products such as toe sleeves that have a gel coating which can slip over the individual painful hammer toes. Stopping the collapsing of the arch will help eliminate abnormal pronation, heel slippage, and friction the foot goes through with each step. Shoe wear will indicate Morton's Foot dysfunction, as well.
